Here's a picute of the group assignment that my English class was given, Creating an Advertisement
Through most people's spare time, they would usually plop onto the couch and turn on their TV. With TV being such a big thing that many people use, companies of any sizes take advantage of that in making the many ads or commercials that annoy, offensive, and just some times rude. Though, it sometimes just looks little a small very comedic ad that's very creative and humours on the surface. Yet, these commercials are just rude and sometimes disgusting.

All commercials are used to promote the service or product that they are selling. Yet, the way some companies do this just tick me off once I started to look deeper into the ad. You can watch the video here.

Here's a screen shot of Axe commercial
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3qYT60DSKQ)
The ad shown above is an example of this. A very creative and what I consider amusing ad by Axe to promote their line of chocolate body spray. Yet, the way that they show that people should buy this product distributes me. The commercial shows a young boy that's spraying body spray on himself making him become a man of chocolate. While he walks around town, all the young women that are around him can't keep themselves away from him. So all the girls there just start licking and eating all the chocolate that is also him too. This is because the ad wants to tell the view that if you use our product you will be irresistible to all the Caucasian young ladies that are around you.

This ad to me is just very awkward. By watching the expression of the boy, he is enjoying the fact that every girl he sees wants him. By saying this, he is very racist. He himself is a Caucasian young boy who only likes young Caucasian woman.  All of  the Caucasian women are all over him are all of the same race. There was no sign of any other race like Asians or African Americans.

Another ad that has some way that includes stereotypes is in the ad created to promote stride. A gum company that is trying to promote their new layer gum. You can watch the commercial here.

Here's a screen shot of Trident Layers commercial
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tviPLpD8VG8)
With the ad shown above about stride new layered gum commercial, we are introduced to the Jones' family. Their family consist of 4 people, a mother, a father, a son and a daughter. One of each gender, is shown in this family. Some would say that this kind of family is the perfect family. Being able to leave their children with a teenage in the middle of the day when other people have to work. Coming back with their children happy and not killing each other.

Yet, when the parents come back, Mr. Jones ask the baby sister if he can pay her in gum instead of money. Even though she earns it by taking care of his children, while he was out with his wife. Instead of telling him off she gladly takes the offer. The man whom I believe to be Asian that was cleaning the chimney and the African American mail man comes and says that they would be gladly paid in the new Stride Layers gum.

From what I stated just by watching this commercial is that Caucasian people are more financially stable then the Asian or African men that was working very heavy and physical jobs. With this is mind, this ad also shows that men are the only ones that are working. From the Asain man that is cleaning the Jones' chimney to the African American man that is delivering the man, none of the people who are working there are women. All of them are men.

Through all that I have to show and rant about, many ads from body spray to something simple like a gum commercial can have a deeper message to them that affects the way people look at themselves. Yet, sometimes I can't blame them, when I was in an English seminar, our teacher gave us the assignment of creating our own ad. The ad that we created is the photo at the very top. When we finally completed it we found out that we accidentally had some form of stereotype there. So in some of the commercial maybe it could have been by accident? Or they purposely added it in there?

  1. I agree with what you said about how some commercials there are showing certain things. I think when they film this, they aren't thinking about the stereotypes, but how they want to present the commercial, which is not right. I also agree with how you said, how in that one commercials they barely showed any other race. Good response, Terra.
